In 2022, Porter Memorial Library received a RevitalizeME grant from the Maine Downtown Center in partnership with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. The purpose of the grant was to fund architectural plans for an accessible entrance to the library building. In the 2-year process of developing these plans, the library’s building committee has learned much about the concerns of architectural decision-makers today.
Join Library Trustee Allison Paprocki for a walking tour of historic architecture in downtown Machias, from the Classical symmetry of the Colonial to the grandeur of Second Empire. What is our local architectural history? How can that history be preserved while meeting the current and future needs of library patrons? The tour will also explore why certain styles became popular, what those styles represented to the people who first used them, and how historic preservation can maintain the functionality of a building.
The Historic Architecture Walking Tour will be led by Allison Paprocki. You can meet Allison at Porter Memorial Library on Saturday, September 14th at 10:00 a.m., or at 12:00 noon. Space is limited, so please sign up here, or call 207-255-3933. The walking tour will cover less than one mile around downtown Machias.
Allison Paprocki is a trustee of Porter Memorial Library, where she has been working on the project to build an accessible addition to the library at 92 Court Street. She teaches English at Machias Memorial High School.
